Chromatogr. B 848:283–291, 2007. A sensitive method has been developed for the determination of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) (>C20) using 1-[2-(ptoluenesulfonate)-ethyl]-2-phenylimidazole-[4,5-f]-9,10-phenanthrene (TSPP) as tagging agent with fluorescence detection, separation by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a reversedphase column and identification with postcolumn atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS). TSPP could easily and quickly label LCFAs at 90°C with high efficiency. Separation of the derivatized LCFAs showed good resolution. Detection limits from 1.0 pmol injection were 26.1976.67 fmol obtained from 0.2 g of plant sample. Eleven free LCFAs were determined in extracts of bryophyte plants.
